Nitric oxide (NO), a gas with paracrine activity, is produced enzymatically from L-arginine and serves as a unique biological mediator involved in various physiological and pathological processes. It is synthesized in several tissues through three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase, one of which is inducible and can produce larger quantities of NO.
