Summary & Explanation

Nitric oxide (NO), a gas with paracrine activity, is produced enzymatically from L-arginine and serves as a unique biological mediator involved in various physiological and pathological processes. It is synthesized in several tissues through three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase, one of which is inducible and can produce larger quantities of NO. NO plays a crucial role in endothelium-dependent regulation of blood flow and pressure, and it also inhibits the activation of blood platelets. Additionally, NO functions as a neurotransmitter in certain nerve types and, along with other free radicals, contributes to the body’s primary defense against microbial infections.
