Summary & Explanation
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-based peroxidase enzyme that in humans is encoded by
the MPO gene on chromosome 17. MPO is most abundantly expressed in neutrophil
granulocytes and it causes its green color in secretions rich in neutrophils, such as pus and
some forms of mucus. MPO is linked to both inflammation and oxidative stress by its location
in leukocytes and its role in catalyzing the formation of oxidizing agents. Recent evidences
suggest that MPO activity precipitates atherogenesis. Most recent studies have indicated that
it is an excellent biomarker for human cardiovascular risk.
